Giants people our local legends. Stories are still passed down today of first ancestors who, depending on the telling, were either driven out or simply left their birthplace in search of new land.
According to our oral tradition, our first ancestor was a man named Lutunasobasoba who travelled down on the Kaunitoni with his family and others. Landing at the shores of what is now called Viseisei, in Vuda, the group broke up and moved away in different directions, populating the islands. This breaking up or breaking away is where Viseisei got its name from. Vuda means our origin.
One of our enduring local legends is that of a giant who fell asleep on top of a mountain and turned to stone. His place of eternal rest is now part of the Sabeto Range. At the foothills is the renowned horticultural orchid garden, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant.
