I’m reading ‘The Good People‘, the second novel by Hannah Kent, and already liking Nance Roche.
Nance reminds me of my late great-grandmother, Tai Bou, who like Nance had ‘the gift’.
Like Nance, Tai Bou was also a dispenser of herbs and tonics gathered, grounded, or steeped from her garden or from the wild places that marked our backyard.
People would come to her bearing a small gift or some money. She bound broken bones, helped women cursed with infertility, and tuva i mau or laid out cards for those seeking guidance.
I’m already looking forward to what Nance will do for Nora’s grandson in the book.
