A Virtuous Man Finds a Virtuous Woman

This is my observation based on Proverbs 31.

If you look closely, the words are meant for King Lemuel, from his mother, who’s telling him what kind of woman to marry. What kind of woman makes a good wife?

A good woman makes a good wife. Or, as the king’s mother puts it, a virtuous wife. A woman doesn’t automatically become virtuous when she gets married. There’s no special ceremony held between the time a couple becomes engaged and their wedding reception, inducting the woman into the realm of virtuousness. Not to my knowledge anyway; I’m a spinster, so do your research.

The man looks for a woman to marry. Not the other way around, as seems to be fashionable amongst the lust-fuelled young, or the lonely elderly nowadays.

A virtuous man finds a virtuous woman. King Lemuel looks for a wife, and I believe that virtuous men are like kings.

What’s the characteristic of a king? Isn’t a king born to lead, govern and protect his people? Doesn’t that sound like a family man to you?

These two God-fearing people find each other, recognise they complement each other, and marry. And I’d like to think that God, in His Fatherly way, brings them together. Sounds romantic. I’m a spinster, and I’m allowed to be romantic. I think a lot of romance is to be had between two God-fearing people who meet, fall in love (why is it called falling?), get married, and live out a Christ-centred marriage.

A man takes a woman to wife. Sounds old-fashioned, doesn’t it? But it’s the truth. A man can only marry a woman, not another man. And a woman cannot marry another woman. Same-sex marriage is unnatural, and God declares it an abomination. That’s God’s truth. God’s reality on which all of life exists.

God alone is the source of all virtue, of all that is good, of all joy, love, truth and life. If you need to be sure you find the right man or woman to marry, go to God first and ask Him to prepare you for marriage and to guide you through it all.

May the LORD God Almighty bless you and your family!
