What Does a Virtuous Woman Look Like?

Canva graphic and illustrations of woman.

Would you be able to recognise her if you passed her at the local shop? What does she sound like? Do you detect a hint of an accent? Did she swear? Is she young, old, or of indeterminate age?

What about her clothing, is it modest, showy, conservative, or fashionable? Does her hairstyle suit her face, or is her hair every colour of the rainbow?

When searching for graphics and illustrations for ‘modest woman’ on Canva, most results showed women wearing hijabs. Interesting, don’t you think, that the hijab is a well-known symbol of modest dressing for Muslim women. Yet, an entire country of Muslim women, like Iran, is burning it because it symbolises oppression for them.

Could this mean that teaching modesty and trying to instil virtuous living is futile when you don’t also instil value and self-worth? And value and self-worth only deepen their roots when they are planted in the rich soil of God’s love, clearly evident when He gave His only begotten Son, Christ Jesus, to die and abolish our sins.

Dressing modestly is important, but it’s not only by her dressing that you can recognise a woman of virtue. I think it would be a combination of her modest dress, her humble attitude, and how forgiving she is of those who have wronged her. How she thinks and talks about God. And the foundation of all these is her relationship with Jesus Christ.

Prayer

“Father God, You are Holy. Please, show us, teach us to be pure and modest in Your sight. In Jesus’ name, I pray this. Amen!”

Writing Prompts

Gather your materials: Your Bible and diary, your favourite pens, highlighters, etc.

Read through Proverbs 31 again, pray, and write down what the Holy Spirit shows you about what you’ve read.
