What Does Psalm 107:1 Teach Us About Gratitude?

When you look back on your life, do you see any example of God’s intervention, where He brought you through a particularly trying circumstance?

Perhaps He rescued you from a bad relationship, an abusive marriage, or strained relations with your family? Has God ever saved you from a potentially fatal accident, or healed you from sickness, or injuries?

Of course, He has.

King David never fails to thank the LORD. His recorded writings, and sayings in the Psalms shows him complaining, yearning, longing, crying, running away, suffering, but always, always, grateful. He always returns to thanking the LORD for rescuing him from his enemies, for saving his life.

A wonderful reminder to us, who are alive right now, to take a moment, lots of moments, to thank the LORD.

Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

God Saves Us, Even in Everyday Situations

It’s true, when you really think about it. And that’s just the incidents we’re aware of. What about the many others that God has stopped or averted before it reaches us, or before we’re even conscious of them?

I catch the bus to and from work, and there have been a few times, when the bus has nearly had an accident, through the bus driver’s carelessness, or that of other drivers, but we came through unscathed each time. I was in Sydney, Australia for work, years ago, and I got lost as I was walking from the city centre to my hotel; after slowing down to utter heartfelt pleas for help and direction, I met friendly strangers who pointed out the way that brought me safe and sound to the hotel.

God does save us, in our everyday life, He is always reaching out His everlasting arms to pull us from certain death. Just as He has redeemed us from eternal death.

Take a moment each day to notice God’s small blessings, and thank Him for them.

How Does God Want Us to Show Gratitude?

By thanking Him in all circumstances, no matter the circumstances. Be thankful that you are alive, right now, no matter where you are, no matter your circumstances, thank the LORD.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18 NKJV

Prayer

“Father God, You are Holy and worthy to be praised! Thank You, for your small blessings and everyday mercies! In Jesus’ name, I pray this. Amen!”

Writing Prompts

Gather your materials: Your Bible, either a physical copy or a digital one; your journal, diary or notebook; favourite pens, highlighters, etc.

Read through the verses again, pray, and write down a list of things you are grateful for. And what the Holy Spirit shows you about what you’ve read.
